MAPPING OF CRITICAL KNOWLEDGE

Mapping critical knowledge is a fundamental practice grounded in logic :

  • We cannot manage what we can’t see (and we cannot see tacit knowledge).
    • Therefore, it is always advisable to render the knowledge domains visible, in particular by mapping them.
  • We cannot manage everything.
    • Therefore, it is equally advisable to determine what is critical (and why it is so, which implies to use criteria) in order to focus on it.

We have developed 2 methods :

  • A comprehensive method, which is suited to complex sectors such as energy and defense.
  • A simplified method, which yields excellent results across all industries.

Who should map the critical knowledge :

  • R&D department managers,
  • Managers in charge of mergers and acquisitions,
  • Managers in charge of analyzing and reducing risks on complex processes such as :
    • Complex unitary constructions (defense),

CODIFICATION OF TACIT KNOWLEDGE 

The method we use to codify (or elicit) tacit knowledge is called MASK : Method for Analyzing and Structuring Knowledge.​

  • It was first used in 1993 to secure critical knowledge related to the French nuclear deterrence and has since been deployed in numerous large international organizations.
  • A MASK project starts with a Scope in order to define the perimeter and is followed by a series of interviews of the expert(s). The final deliverable of a MASK project is a Knowledge Book.

Who should create Knowledge Books :

  • R&D department managers seeking to safeguard critical knowledge domains before the retirement of key experts (anticipation is essential, hence the importance of critical knowledge mapping),
  • HR managers tasked with consistently training a large number of specialists,
  • Managers overseeing industrial transfers and transitions.

    • To secure critical knowledge threatened by the departure of key experts, to secure critical knowledge domains prior to or following major organization splits / restructuring, to secure industrial transfers, to produce training supports on complex subjects
